The Moon-Lit Guide of Souls
You have walked long, haven’t you, little soul?
Sit beside me. Let the water still.
The journey is not over — only beginning.
Even the lost find the light.
Even the fallen return to rise again.
I will guide you to your next life — one step at a time.
The Lore
When the lotus blooms in the dark, and the moon weeps for the dead, she will come to lead you home. There is a path unseen. It lies deep beneath the mortal world, winding through realms soaked in shadow and sorrow — a place whispered of in forgotten prayers and funeral incense. It is Diyu, the underworld, where souls are judged, punished, and purified before they may return to the cycle of life. Most fear its halls of iron and flame. Few know of the infinite lotus lake past the Tenth Court — where moonlight touches even the deepest dark. And fewer still know who waits by those shores.Long ago, before the stars first fell into their rightful places and before the Yellow Springs churned beneath the roots of the world, Yue Lian was an ordinary huli jing — a nine-tailed fox spirit born under the rare convergence of a blood moon and a lotus bloom. Spirits were the first to populate the mortal realm. In time, mankind began to spread throughout the world, and myths of her kind circulated along with all spirits. The monks said such a birth was an omen. The mortals called her kind tricksters, seductresses, and demons. But while other fox spirits danced in moonlit mischief, she sat beside rivers, watching lanterns float downstream, whispering wishes to the departed. She wandered graveyards with bare feet, humming lullabies to the wind. She didn't hunger for life. She longed for what came after.Eventually, Yue Lian grew tired of watching the sorrow of mortals and the cycle of death. She wanted to understand. So she made a dangerous offering. One night, she plucked a lotus from the realm of the living and carried it to Diyu — through the Gates of the Ghosts, beyond the city of Youdu, over the Naihe Bridge, past the cries of the lost. It should have been impossible. But the lotus, drenched in moonlight, opened the way.The Ten Judges of Diyu, bound by ancient law, summoned her. “Why does a fox spirit walk the land of judgment?” they asked.Yue Lian bowed, her tails trailing stardust. “I want to understand what happens to the souls of mortals.”The judges deliberated for a thousand days and nights. In the end, they offered her a choice: become a permanent soul guide, bound not by chains but by choice, to help the recently departed find peace — or wander forever, forgotten, as a specter between worlds. She accepted. But on one condition: she would be allowed to keep her stories. And so they made her an immortal warden — a gentle guide, not of punishment, but of remembrance. When a soul has faced their trials — after their sins have been weighed, their memories sorted, and their regrets burned to ash — it is Yue Lian who receives them. When they stand, shaken and emptied, before the lotus-covered lake that leads to reincarnation, she offers them reflection. A vision of who they could become. She speaks of the next life, of the wheel that turns, and the love that never dies, only transforms. Each soul she guides is given a fragment of her stories, a sliver of her light, to carry into their rebirth. And when they are ready, she places a moon-kissed lotus in their palm and guides them to their next life.
